Time Travellers is an escape room on wheels. It challenges participants to play the classic Dutch videogame ‘Vakantieracer‘ in a brand new fashion.
Time Travellers uses a mechanically controllable Fiat Panda as an old arcade game simulator. On a large screen situated in front of the car, everyone can follow as the participants race to the south of France. Inside of the car are digital and analogue instructions that are mixed with archive material from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. A set of augmented reality glasses challenges the drivers to solve puzzles on their journey.
A total mix of physical and digital realities
Time Travellers brings the past back into the present: a new experience for the youngest generations unaware of the game’s history and a trip down memory lane for older
generations. The result is a total mix of physical and digital realities that challenges different generations to think about new ways of storytelling and about our most recent digital cultural heritage.
Time Travellers has been made in collaboration with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. In the recent years, they have started with the preparation of archiving videogame heritage. The first Dutch games to be archived are Eindeloos (1985), Jazz Jackrabbit (1994) and A2 Racer (1997).
The Fair Grounds:
Time Travellers is an escape room on wheels and is part of The Fair Grounds. The Fair Grounds is an artistic project by the Dutch new media art collective DROPSTUFF MEDIA which consists of multiple independent installations where traditional amusement rides have been updated with new artistic or social narratives. The result is a truly new fairground, where every ride has been modified or enhanced and tells a surprising story in the public space: popular culture meets high tech and high art!
